HVAC (Heating, Ventilation & Air Conditioning) FAQ

Once you’ve checked the power cord or power button, remember to check the breakers. Turn it back on if the breaker was accidentally turned off. Try re-setting the breaker if it has tripped (in a half way position). Do not re-set the breaker if it trips again; it is time to call a technician.

Why isn’t my air conditioning working? It is too warm in here!

  • Check the thermostat. It should be set to “COOL.” The temperature should be set anywhere between 21°C and 23°C.
  • Do NOT set the thermostat lower than 21°C. Doing so WILL NOT make the room cooler faster! The air-conditioner will run continuously and eventually freeze up, resulting in NO cooling.
  • When is the last time the air filters were changed? We recommend changing air filters every 3 to 4 months for most air-conditioning systems. Dirty air filters causes inadequate air flow, which can cause malfunctions.

Why is my produce case too warm?

  • Is the case overloaded? Produce cases are designed to create an air curtain from the top or back of the case to the lower or front. The case will run warm if product is stacked and preventing air to flow to and from these grills .

Why is my walk-in cooler warming up? (or freezer)

  • Are the fans inside running? If not, the system may be in defrost, this is normal. Record the time and re-check in about half an hour. If the fans inside are still not running – call us.
  • Check the water supply if it is a water-cooled compressor unit . Sometimes the supply valve is shut off by accident. Alternatively, water supply might have been temporarily interrupted in the building.
  • Check the accuracy of the thermometer measuring the temperature. A quality electronic pocket style thermometer is recommended.
  • Always ensure that staff are closing the door properly when exiting.

Why isn’t my fridge cooling?

  • Check if the temperature controls have accidentally adjusted.
  • Was the door left open? Give it a few hours to return to normal temperature.
  • Can you feel cold air when the door is closed? Do the door seals appear damaged. Defective door seals can easily be replaced by a technician.

My freezer is too cold

  • Do you notice frost accumulating around pipes? Your condenser may need adjusting by a technician to prevent overcooling.

Why is my fridge so loud?

  • If your fridge is running all the time or noisy, the most common reason is the condenser. Our technicians can inspect it to tell you more.

Why is my ice machine not working?

  • Ensure the water supply to the machine has not been shut off.
  • Most ice machines are air-cooled. Always ensure there is adequate space around the machine for ventilation. Ice machines do not work well in hot environments.
  • Your water filter should be replaced every 3 months (depending on usage) if installed on the water supply inlet. A dirty filter causes inadequate water flow to the machine, which affects its operation.

Electrical FAQ

What should I expect from an electrical contractor when we are planning an expansion of our plant?

Where should I install a generator? I need backup power, but I don’t have space for a generator.

Start by asking TransCold for a free evaluation of your business to discuss options. For example, maintenance free batteries can store energy to power essential loads during power outages. The same batteries can be recharged by solar panels or wind turbines to extend run-time during outages. We design and install affordable, zero emission backup power systems such as these.
